Outdoor Lawn Furniture

You can make your backyard into an ideal place to relax after a hard day's work, as well as a great setting to entertain  friends and family on the weekends. It just takes the right outdoor lawn furniture.

Before creating the perfect outdoor space, you need to figure out how you want to use it. A private, zen-like space will be a bit different than an outdoor entertaining area with a large outdoor kitchen. If you're lucky, your backyard will be large enough to accommodate both. If you have a small space, you need to think what type of backyard living space will suit your needs the best and decorate accordingly.

Realize that your outdoor patio and lawn furniture will be exposed to the elements year-round, unless you bring them in for winter storage. The summer sun will beat relentlessly, so you will need to find pieces that won't fade in sunlight. For patio areas where rain is not a problem, either in desert climates or where the lawn or patio has a sheltering roof-overhang, wicker or rattan furniture is a popular, elegant choice for the outdoors. If rain is a problem, though, cedar patio furniture works, but teak tends to have more style. Wrought iron is also another choice that does well outside, as long as it's treated with enamel to prevent rust from forming.

In addition to the type of furniture, you also want to consider your cushions. The major problem here is with fabrics that can discolor, fade and become ruined when daily exposed to UV. Laminated cotton, vinyl coated polyester and acrylic materials are some of your most rugged fabric choices.

So, what pieces should you get? If you want to eat outside, you will definitely want a patio dining set with four to six chairs and a dining table. In addition, you should either get a large patio umbrella or have a roll-up or retractable patio awning installed. Be careful with umbrellas --- always close them up when not in use, and store them in a sheltered area like a garage during storms. Awnings, too, should be retracted when not in use. Retractable awnings are more expensive than umbrellas, but are also more convenient and offer greater coverage.

A couple of Adirondack chairs and a hammock will make your backyard an inviting place in which to relax.  Hammocks can be free standing, or tied to a couple trees. There are also hammock-style chairs, if space is a problem.
