Tips on Watering a Lawn
According to home buyers, a well maintained and healthy lawn
adds 15% to the home value. It's really no wonder, as a
beautiful lawn practically adds another room onto your house,
albeit an outside room. You can entertain on it, as well
as play on it.
Nothing is more important to a healthy lawn as property
watering. Here are some useful tips on watering your lawn
properly:
1. Be aware of the weather. Just
because it's summer doesn't mean you automatically start
watering your lawn. Allowing the lawn to start to grow
under a mild drought can strengthen its rooting. You can also
monitor rainfall. Don't water your lawn if you are expecting
rain.
2. Choose the right time of the day to
water. What is that best time? Early morning
from 8AM to 9AM and late evening from 10PM to midnight. These
times are good because there will be no excessive evaporation
and no inefficient use of water because during these times, the
temperature is cooler and less humid.
3. Avoid over watering. Keep in mind
that over watering is actually more harmful than lack of water.
Most grasses (e.g. turf) are resilient, thus they can bear less
water than an oversupply. Generally, 1 to 1.5” of water per
week is required; this amount is just apt to moisten and soften
the soil. One way of measuring the water supplied to your lawn
is to purchase a rain gauge. (Check out the two decorative rain
gauges we offer).
4. Use the right type of sprinkler.
Measure the amount of water your sprinkler is giving out.
Sprinklers which spurt low to the ground are better than fan
type oscillating sprinklers that can lose water due to wind
drift and evaporation before it hits the lawn.
The most important point to remember on lawn watering is to
know the type of soil and the weather. You can experiment on
what will efficiently work on your lawn. Keep records and
create your best watering schedule. Be cautious though not to
focus on watering alone but on each and every factor which
contributes to a healthy lawn.
